Understanding Eternal Life Knowing the Father Through the Son: A Theological Reflection on John 17:3 (Part 1)

We Have Reduced Eternal Life to a Place Few biblical expressions are as familiar—and as misunderstood—as eternal life. Mention the phrase in most Christian circles and the immediate response is predictable: going to heaven when we die. While that is certainly included in the Christian hope, it is not how Jesus defines eternal life. That observation alone should arrest our attention. In His final recorded prayer before His arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection, Jesus does something remarkable. Rather than leaving His disciples to infer the meaning of eternal life, He defines it explicitly: "And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." (John 17:3)
